Futuristic Movies

I entered my office/storage room, sat down at my cheap IKEA desk, and stared through the window at the Icelandic weather. At one point, it got so dark that it almost felt like it was night already. All of a sudden, it started to snow, and then the next thing I knew, a hailstorm began crushing everything in sight. A few seconds later, the storm passed and the sun peeked through the dark clouds. Weather can be so unpredictable. Then I thought, what else can be unpredictable? Oh right, the future.

Since the future is the main theme of this issue of the Student Paper, I wondered whether I should put together a list of futuristic movies. I mean, it’s always fun to wonder about the future or to be reminded of the good old days. So why not take a look at some sci-fi goldies!

These five movies are all pretty much classics today - well, except for Blade Runner 2049. Some protagonists travel to the future; for example, in Back to the Future Part II (1989), Marty and Doc travel all the way to 21 October 2015. The movie’s portrayal of the future is nothing like reality, unless I’ve somehow missed the flying cars and ubiquitous hologram displays. The Terminator (1984) on the other hand, is a movie about a programmed human soldier who goes to the past to save the world. The Terminator, played by Arnold Schwarzenegger, goes from 2029 to 1984 to execute a woman carrying a mysterious child. How spooky! The Matrix (1999) probably needs no introduction, but just for the fun of it, here it is. The Matrix is a simulated reality for human beings created by futuristic machines that want to decrease the human population. The movie includes a wide range of references, from religion to Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Even those who have never seen The Matrix before are surely familiar with Neo’s famous dodging-the-bullets move, a true masterpiece! Aliens (1986) is the mother of all alien movies. Aliens is about a spaceship that is found after being lost in space for 57 years. The spaceship includes one human survivor as well as some other survivors. Blade Runner 2049 is the sequel to Blade Runner (1982). The movie features Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford, and many more great actors. Blade Runner 2049 portrays a wildly imaginative future that includes bioengineered humans, flying cars, holographic girlfriends, and whatnot!

So pop some popcorn, get a cold drink, and enjoy these 5 wild and unique futuristic movies!
