Sam, the Vegan Fire Spinner
An interview with Samuel Hogarth, English student at UI
When I first met Sam, I got the feeling we had known each other for years, it was just that easy to talk to him. His friendly attitude and funny, easygoing vibe is very refreshing. He’s a vegan, doesn’t drink alcohol, (and has written a book about that, called Why the World Doesn’t Need Alcohol - available on Amazon if you’re interested!), and he works out at Mjölnir.
I think those factors in his life definitely help him keep that good vibe going, so I interviewed him about his fun and healthy lifestyle.
What is your favorite healthy meal?
Roasted kale with chickpeas. Simple and high in protein.
What is your favorite unhealthy meal?
Vegan Dominos pizza - vegan cheese, mushrooms, garlic, oregano, and black pepper.
Tell us about Mjölnir, for example why you like it and how you feel there (the vibe there).
You’re inspired and motivated because you train with the best fighters in Iceland. That makes you want to push yourself harder. Everyone there is so humble. I really like kickboxing, yoga, the sauna, and Víkingaþrek.
Do you do some kind of mindfulness exercises?
Yes. I meditate, and I really like stretching for half an hour while listening to motivational speeches.
Do you go swimming?
I have been to Sundhöllin several times.
Is there a big difference between Iceland and England from a health perspective?
The healthy options available in England are just as good as in Iceland. There’s more fast food in the UK though. I think Iceland is more aware of healthy eating.
Do you have some kind of a sleeping routine?
No phone for about 20 minutes or even an hour before I go to sleep.
What are your main hobbies?
My main hobbies are fire spinning and writing.
Anything else you would like to add?
Join Mjölnir! Everyone should make an effort to exercise. It helps you sleep better and feel good. I avoid sugar, don’t drink fizzy drinks, try to avoid packaged food, and buy fresh food instead. I really like to go running to stay sharp. I regularly use the cold tub at Mjölnir and have a cold shower every day. Making yourself uncomfortable every day is key.
