What is so special about Iceland // Hvað er svona merkilegt við Ísland?

Ef það var eitthvað sem mér mislíkaði þegar ég bjó á Spáni, þá var það þegar útlendingar töluðu illa um landið og siði Spánverja.  Í lok þessarar greinar mun ég þó telja upp fátt eitt sem mér líkar ekki við Ísland.

Það sem heillar mig 

Eitt af því sem mér finnst frábært við Ísland er þegar ég er úti að hjóla, í miðri náttúrunni og enginn í kring, bara víðáttan. Það er sagt að asískir ferðamenn sem hingað koma  reki upp óstjórnlegt öskur þegar þeir komast upp á jökla. Líklega er það eitthvað svipað því sem gerist hjá okkur hinum, sem komum frá fjölmennum löndum.

Af hverju hjóla svona fáir Íslendingar á veturna?

Ég held að einhverjum Íslendingum finnist ég skrítinn, þessi spænski rithöfundur sem ferðast um á hjóli á veturna og birtist eins og snjókarl út úr miðri hríðinni. Stundum stoppa ég í Fossvoginum og fylgist með fuglunum, horfi á himininn breyta um lit og sé hvernig húsin speglast í voginum og minna á málverk eftir Jón Stefánsson. Þeir farþegar sem ferðast um á einkabíl missa af þessari fegurð.  Margir þeirra halda líklega að paradís sé að finna í Flórída. Við eigum það til að gleyma því að bestu hlutir í heimi eru ókeypis, eins og til dæmis göngutúr með fjölskyldunni í náttúrunni og með nesti.

Flóttafólk á Íslandi

Ég er þeirrar skoðunar að ef þeir útlendingar hingað koma, eru heiðarlegir, vilja vinna og læra tungumálið, þá auðgi það land og þjóð.  Hvað varðar flóttamenn, þá myndi ég nýta þá hæfileika sem koma með nýju fólki sem og dreifa fólkinu á þá staði sem þarfnast vinnuafls t.d. í fiskverkun og landbúnaðarstörf. Ávinningur fyrir alla.

Annar kostur þess að bjóða erlent fólk velkomið er að með þeim er hægt að bæta erfðastofn Íslendinga.  Mér þykir leitt að segja það, en þið eruð öll mjög lík.  Stundum forðast ég að heilsa kunnuglegu andliti, þar sem ég er nær viss um að ég sé að fara mannavillt.

Hvað er svona merkilegt við Ísland? Af hverju kýs Spánverji að búa hér?

1.  Gömlu hefðirnar og menningin er það sem heillar mig mest við Ísland.
    
2. Börnin kalla miðdagshressinguna ennþá „kaffitíma“ (þegar ég heyrði á þetta minnst í fyrsta skipti hugsaði ég: ha, börn að drekka kaffi?).
    
3. Það er röð í ísbúðinni í 10 stiga frosti.
    
4. Í kvikmyndahúsunum er hlé til að fólk geti keypt sér nammi.
    
5. Íslensk list er sérstök og mikilsmetin. Til að nefna fáein nöfn af mörgum: Laxness, Björk, Kjarval.
    
6. Á Íslandi er bara ein ríkisrekin sjónvarpsstöð. 
    
7. Á gamlárskvöld situr öll þjóðin límd við sjónvarpsskjáinn að horfa á þennan sérstaka áramótaþátt og göturnar eru gjörsamlega mannlausar.
    
8. Föðurlandsást Íslendinga fær þá til að hvetja hverfisliðið sitt áfram fram í rauðan dauðann og velja íslenska vöru þótt hún sé á þrefalt hærra verði.
    
9. Það er ánægjulegt að Reykjavík sé ekki enn ein útgáfan af öðrum höfuðborgum. Íslendingar hafa ekki ennþá selt sig erlendu stórfyrirtækjunum og reka sína eigin hamborgarastaði, ísbúðir og kaffihús. Reyndar svíður mig í augun í hvert sinn sem ég geng fram hjá Dunkin’ Donuts sem er nú komið í miðja Kringluna.  Það er eitthvað fagurfræðilega rangt við það og svo finnst mér skrítið að sjá Íslendingana bíða í röð eftir kleinuhring með sömu undirgefni og þegar þeir skafa af bílnum á morgnana.
    
10. En fyrir utan þessi smáatriði, þá tel ég það til fyrirmyndar að Ísland er laust við Evrópusambandið og hvorki háð olíu frá arabísku furstadæmunum né gasi frá Rússlandi.  Þess væri óskandi að Spánverjar gerðu hið sama og létu sér nægja vind- og sólarorku.  Um það fjallar bókin mín meðal annars og þess vegna kallast hún:  „Við þurfum breytingu – Íslenski draumurinn“.

Það sem mér líkar ekki við Ísland:           

Endurvinnslustefna Íslendinga er mikil byrði fyrir fólkið hér enda þarf að fara með allt draslið í sérstakar endurvinnslustöðvar. Auk þess blöskrar mér hvað Íslendingar tala mikið í farsíma undir stýri, þetta er hættulegt, sérstaklega fyrir hjólandi vegfarendur. 

Niðurstaða:

Af þessum ástæðum ákvað ég að flytja til Íslands.  Eftir tvö og hálft ár yrði mér erfitt að snúa til baka í heimahagana, í gömlu vinnuna mína sem hagfræðingur.

If there is something I disliked when living in Spain was that foreigners railed against the country and customs of the Spaniards. Although if someone wants to know what I do not like about Iceland, keep on reading this article, I’ll explain it in the end.

What fascinates me the most about Iceland

One of the things that fascinates me most about this island is that often I end up with my bike in the middle of nowhere and I´m alone, lost in a vast expanse of land. They say that when Asian tourists get to the top of a glacier, they start screaming; they cannot help it. I guess, on a different scale, that the same happens to us who come from other densely populated countries.

Just a few Icelanders bike in the winter!

Some Icelanders look at me as the crazy Spanish writer who cycles in winter and appears from the eye of the storm like a snowman. Sometimes I stop in the valley of Fossvogur to see the birds, the changing colors of the sky and the houses of the opposite bank reflected on the water like a painting by Jón Stefánsson. Vehicle passengers miss these details, when driving their way warmly, listening to the radio.  Those are probably the ones who believe that Florida is the place you’ll find paradise. Frequently we forget that the best things in life are for free. For example, going to the valley with the family and have nesti (snack).

Refugees in Iceland

I consider that foreigners, if they are honest, they want to work and seek to learn the language, enrich a country with its diversity.  Regarding refugees, I would try to use the special expertise of the most qualified ones and employ the others in areas where manpower is needed for fishing, livestock and agriculture. Everyone would be benefited.

Iceland needs new DNA

Another important reason to integrate more people in Iceland is renewing genetics. Því miður. Some people are like two drops of water. I admit that sometimes I avoid to say hello to an acquaintance because I am afraid of addressing a strange by mistake.

Why is Iceland so special for a Spanish writer?

What does make Iceland so special? Why would a Spaniard from Barcelona want to live here?

1. Personally, I think the biggest attraction of Iceland lies in the preservation of its traditions and culture.
    
2. The kids still call "coffee time" to the snack time in the afternoon (when I heard it first I said: “What?! Children having coffee?”).
    
3. There is a line in front of the ice cream shop even when the outside temperature is ten degrees below zero.
    
4. The movies in the cinema are still interrupted in the middle to let the audience stock up of nammi (sweets).
    
5. The Icelandic art is a rarity admired all over the world. For example: Laxness, Björk, Kjarval, etc.
    
6. There are only two TV channels and the programming is the same with an hour of difference.
    
7. On new year´s eve every one stays in front of the TV to watch the special program and the streets look like a desert, as the Eyjafjallajökull would have erupted again.
    
8. The Icelandic patriotism that leads the Icelanders to encourage the modest team in their neighbourhood and consume domestic products, even though they can reach triple price compared to the imported ones.
    
9. Reykjavik is not a clone of other capitals. Iceland has not yet succumbed to the power of large corporations and keeps it’s burgers, ice-cream shops and cafes. However, my eyes still hurt every time I see the Dunkin’ Donuts station placed in the middle of the mall Kringlan. It breaks all the building’s aesthetics and I find it strange to observe the Icelanders waiting in line with the same resignation as they show every morning when they get the ice out of the cars with their scrapers.
    
10. Exceptions aside, Iceland is a paradigm for having managed to stay out of the tentacles of the EU, being energetically independent and friendly with the environment. I wish Spain did something similar and would supply itself with it’s abundant wind and sun. Therefore the title of my novel is: "We need a change. The dream of Iceland".

What I don't like about Iceland

The recycling policy in Iceland is a burden for the citizens who have to store, load and carry the trash to the specials centres and that drivers still use the mobile phone at any time while driving and this is very dangerous, especially for bikes.

Conclusion

For these reasons, apart from little exceptions, I bet all my pieces at the roulette to this country. And after living here for two and a half years I would find to return to my old life in Spain difficult.

Si hay algo que detestaba cuando vivía en España era que los extranjeros despotricasen del país y de las costumbres de los españoles.

¿QUÉ ES LO QUE ME FASCINA MÁS DE ISLANDIA?

Una de las cosas que me apasiona de esta isla es que muchas veces apareces con tu bicicleta en mitad de la nada y estás solo, perdido en una vasta extensión de terreno. Dicen que cuando llevan a los turistas orientales a lo alto del glaciar, se ponen a gritar; no pueden evitarlo. Supongo que, a diferente escala, a los que procedemos de otros países densamente poblados nos sucede lo mismo.

POCOS ISLANDESES VAN EN BICICLETA EN INVIERNO

Creo que algunos islandeses me toman por loco: ese escritor español que va en bicicleta en invierno y aparece como un muñeco de nieve en el ojo de la tormenta. Algunas veces me paro en la bahía de Fossvogur para ver a los pájaros, el cambio de tonalidad del cielo y las casas de la orilla de enfrente dibujadas en el agua como en un cuadro de Jón Stefánsson. Muchos de los que van calentitos en sus coches, escuchando música, no se enteran de nada. Son los mismos que piensan que el paraíso empieza en Florida. Frecuentemente nos olvidamos de que las mejores cosas del mundo son gratis. Por ejemplo, ir con la familia al valle y comer juntos el nesti (merienda).

REFUGIADOS

Soy del parecer de que los extranjeros, si son honrados, vienen a trabajar y acceden a aprender el idioma, enriquecen un país con su diversidad. Respecto a los refugiados, aprovecharía el talento de los más cualificados y emplearía al resto en las zonas donde falta mano de obra para la pesca, la ganadería y la agricultura. Así saldrían beneficiados todos.

RENOVAR EL ADN EN ISLANDIA

Otro motivo importante para integrar a más gente en Islandia es por renovar sus genes. Því miður. La gente se parece demasiado. Algunos son como dos gotas de agua. Reconozco que a veces no saludo a algún conocido por miedo de dirigirme a un tercero por error.

¿POR QUÉ ISLANDIA ES TAN ESPECIAL PARA UN ESCRITOR ESPAÑOL?

¿Qué hace tan especial a Islandia? ¿Por qué un español de Barcelona vendría a vivir aquí?

1. Personalmente, el mayor atractivo de Islandia recae en la preservación de sus tradiciones y la cultura.
    
2. Los niños siguen llamando “la hora del café” a la merienda. La primera vez pensé: ¿Niños bebiendo café?
    
3. Hay cola para comprarse un helado a 10 grados bajo cero.
    
4. En el cine todavía hay una pausa en mitad de la película para aprovisionarse de nammi (chuherías).
    
5. El arte islandés es una rara avis admirada por todos. Abundan los ejemplos: Laxness, Björk, Kjarval, etc.
    
6. El patriotismo de los islandeses los lleva a animar al equipo más modesto de su barrio y a consumir el producto nacional, aunque sea tres veces más caro.
    
7. Hay solo dos canales de televisión, aunque en realidad emiten la misma programación con una hora de diferencia.
    
8. Cuando emiten el programa especial de fin de año en televisión, no hay nadie por las calles, es como si entrase en erupción el volcán Eyjafjallajökull.
    
9. Es un alivio que Reykjavik no sea un clon de otras capitales. Islandia aún no ha sucumbido al poder de las grandes multinacionales y conserva sus hamburguesas, heladerías y cafeterías de siempre. Sin embargo, me duelen los ojos cada vez que paso frente al Dunkin’ Donuts que han instalado en mitad del centro comercial Kringlan. Rompe toda su estética y se me hace extraño ver a los islandeses haciendo cola con la misma resignación que cada mañana sacan el hielo de sus coches con las rasquetas.
    
10. Islandia es un paradigma por haber conseguido mantenerse al margen de los tentáculos de la UE, ser independiente energéticamente y respetuosa con el medio ambiente. Ojalá España hiciese algo semejante y se autoabasteciera de recursos autóctonos como el viento y el sol. En consecuencia, mi novela se titula: Necesitamos un cambio. El sueño de Islandia.

¿QUÉ ES LO QUE NO ME GUSTA DE ISLANDIA?

A modo de curiosidad, creo que hay dos cosas mejorables: Su política de reciclaje, que es una carga para el ciudadano, puesto que hay que almacena, cargar y llevar la basura regularmente a los centros habilitados para ello y que los conductores siguen utilizando el teléfono móvil en el coche con frecuencia.

UN GRAN PAÍS

En general soy muy feliz aquí. Por los motivos mencionados, aposté en la ruleta todas mis fichas a este país. Y tras dos años y medio, se me haría difícil regresar a mi antigua vida en España.
