This year Iceland will participate for the third time in the Guinness World Record of changing cloth diapers. The Great Cloth Diaper Change started in 2011 when Judy Aagard, the owner of a cloth diaper washing service in the United States, wanted to celebrate and promote the use of reusable diapers.

The record of 8459 cloth diapers changed at the same time in 18 countries on 6 continents was set in 2014. Thereof 49 diapers were changed in Iceland and this year that number is expected to double.

The event will be held in Tjarnarsalur in Reykjavik’s town hall on the 18th of April at 11:00 in the morning. Everybody is welcome to come and see how a Guinness World Record is held.

People wishing to participate can like the event’s Facebook page: GCDiceland. There are giveaways and surprises for the people who participate in the event. There is no need to be a cloth diaper aficionado, everybody is welcome to participate even though they usually use disposable diapers for their child. The main purpose of the Great Cloth Diaper Change is to raise awareness in the community about cloth diapers, supporting local businesses and reducing waste.

Í ár tekur Ísland, í þriðja skipti, þátt í heimsmeti Guinness í bleyjuskiptum. Metið gengur undir nafninu Taubleyjuskiptin miklu eða The Great Cloth Diaper Change á ensku. Það hófst árið 2011 þegar Judy Aagard, eigandi taubleyju þvottaþjónustu í Bandaríkjunum, langaði að fagna og efla notkun endurnotanlegra bleyja.

Metið sem náðist árið 2014 var að skipt var um 8459 taubleyjur á sama tíma í 18 mismunandi löndum í 6 heimsálfum. Þar af var skipt um 49 bleyjur á Íslandi en þetta árið er gert ráð fyrir að tvöfalda árangurinn.

Viðburðurinn verður haldinn í Tjarnarsalnum í Ráðhúsi Reykjavíkur morguninn 18. apríl klukkan ellefu. Allir eru velkomnir að koma og fylgjast með því hvernig Guinness heimsmet er haldið.

Það er óþarfi að vera fær í að skipta um bleyjur eða vera sérstakur áhugamaður um bleyjur. Allir geta tekið þátt jafnvel þó svo þeir noti venjulega einnota bleyjur fyrir barnið sitt. Aðal markmið Taubleyjuskiptanna miklu er að vekja athygli í samfélaginu á taubleyjum, að styðja innlenda framleiðslu og minnka sorp.
